The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, is tasked with tackling pressing global issues like nuclear disarmament, arms regulation, terrorism, and cybersecurity challenges. While its resolutions are not legally binding, DISEC collaborates with bodies such as the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) to advance collective efforts toward global peace and security. \u00a0DISEC offers a dynamic forum for Intermediate delegates who might not otherwise get to discuss critical international security.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The regulation of chemical warfare poses a great struggle in times where potential threats not only arise from conflicts between state-actors but also an increasing number of non-state actors. While chemical warfare is already heavily regulated on an international level through agreements such as the Chemical Weapons Convention, a lack of transparency and accusations of state-funded use have shown the need for continued diplomatic efforts on further regulation, to ensure that the detrimental effects of chemical weapons can be limited. Increased military spending and a multitude of global conflicts are two of many hurdles delegates must examine to determine how to balance national sovereignty with the security risk that chemical weapons pose, especially when accountability and non-state actor funding are not often able to be determined.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

My name is Aino Leena and I am honoured to chair the DISEC at MaltMUN \u201926. Next to my longtime MUN journey, I study law in Berlin, where I also work as a research assistant in international law. Next to law, my passions include theatre, literature, swimming and partaking in whatever \u2018side quest\u2019 life might throw at me. I am a 23-year-old originally from Libya, currently pursuing a Master\u2019s degree in Humanitarian Action. I began my Model United Nations journey three years ago, and MaltMUN 2026 marks my first experience as a Chair, which I am incredibly excited about. I\u2019m looking forward to meeting delegates, getting to know them, and supporting them throughout their journey in committee.
