Recent years have shown us that several countries in the Americas have been dealing with concerns over democratic erosion, such as judicial independence, restrictions on press freedom, political polarization, corruption, disputed elections, and attempts to undermine constitutional checks and balances. From Brazil to the United States to Peru to Venezuela to Argentina to Bolivia to El Salvador to Mexico, it seems that everyday people find different ways to suppress the will of the population through democratic backsliding. The core issue would be electoral integrity and how this committee can protect it without harming national sovereignty. Issues such as the role of courts in ensuring electoral fairness and high levels of corruption in administrations will form the backbone of this discussion. Delegates will have to bring their own national solutions on the table and seek to find a common ground.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I come from Romania and I am a second year European Law student at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands and I have been doing MUN\u2019s for over 4 years now. By means of introduction I am Michael, a fourth-year law student at the University of Malta, serving as the Secretary General within the Maltese National Youth Council (KN\u017b), as well as Director General at the Model European Union Strasbourg (MEUS). After years of involvement in roles such as President of JEF Malta and Secretary-General of MaltMUN, I actively work to promote youth participation and democracy at both the national and international levels, especially as a One Young World Ambassador and YEA.
