COMMITTEE
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, is tasked with tackling pressing global issues like nuclear disarmament, arms regulation, terrorism, and cybersecurity challenges. While its resolutions are not legally binding, DISEC collaborates with bodies such as the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) to advance collective efforts toward global peace and security. DISEC offers a dynamic forum for Intermediate delegates who might not otherwise get to discuss critical international security.
TOPIC
The South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (abbreviated as ZPCAS/ZOPACAS) was established in 1986 by UN Resolution A/RES/41/11 upon Brazil’s initiative. The main aim of this zone was to prevent militarization, particularly in the nuclear dimension. Fast forward four decades, tensions are high in the Mediterranean. An influx of irregular migration, terrorism, and arms and drug trafficking dominate the region’s instability, and it is projected to worsen without proper action. The discussion of applying the ZOPACAS model to the Mediterranean comes into play, with a need for institutionalised and durable security architecture. The successes of the South Atlantic model serve as an inspiration, and hence a discussion on its feasibility, dimensions, and applicability is what awaits Delegates in DISEC.
