Recent years have shown us that several countries in the Americas have been dealing with concerns over democratic erosion, such as judicial independence, restrictions on press freedom, political polarization, corruption, disputed elections, and attempts to undermine constitutional checks and balances. From Brazil to the United States to Peru to Venezuela to Argentina to Bolivia to El Salvador to Mexico, it seems that everyday people find different ways to suppress the will of the population through democratic backsliding. The core issue would be electoral integrity and how this committee can protect it without harming national sovereignty. Issues such as the role of courts in ensuring electoral fairness and high levels of corruption in administrations will form the backbone of this discussion. Delegates will have to bring their own national solutions on the table and seek to find a common ground.
