Part of AIIB’s founding mission was counterbalancing the limited influence of Asian nations in ‘west-dominated’ organisations like the World Bank and IMF. Though it has succeeded in channeling funding to the continent, not every nation has seen its fair share. The funding pool has been dominated by larger, more economically advanced member countries with an insatiable demand for infrastructure development. These nations also have the largest voting power. Is the AIIB at risk of recreating the same structures it sought to dismantle? As the differing rates of adoption for climate transition and sustainable infrastructure becomes more apparent, how can AIIB position itself to optimise outcomes for all nations it serves in a rapidly changing global landscape.
