In recent years, there has been an increase in social media channels and websites, utilised to produce foreign information manipulation and interference. A recent Eurobarometer study highlights that a high number of EU citizens agree, that defence and security should be placed as the Union’s highest priority, including foreign interference and hybrid threats. Such interference destabilises national politics and the EU more broadly. Foreign interference in national elections leads to rising support for parties whose manifestos rest on dismantling the EU. While existing solutions discourage certain elements of foreign interference, more needs to be done to ensure maximum security from emerging hybrid threats. In the CoEU, Delegates will discuss what measures can be applied to counter these trends and develop modern solutions to stabilise European democracies.
